Don Koharski's Camp to be Held in Mid-August in Maine

Don Koharski's Officiating and Development Camp will occur on August 15-18, 2014 at MHG Ice Center in Saco, Maine.  This is the only U.S. location where Don and his staff of NHL and minor-pro league officials will offer their training this Summer.

Special guests at this location will include:

  • Paul Stewart, Director of Officiating ECAC and Vice-Chairman of Officiating KHL,
  • Eugene Binda, Supervisor of NCAA Division 1 Officials Atlantic Hockey, NCAA division 3 ECAC North East, MASCAC, North East 10, USPHL, EHL,
  • Jim Doyle, Supervisor of Officials AHL/ECHL, and
  • Don Garcia, Supervisor of Officials ECAC.

USA Hockey Officials Meet NHL Officials at Hockey Weekend Across America Games

USA Hockey Officials Eric Sailor (Sewell, NJ), Charlie Van Kula (Radnor, PA), Ryan Siegel (Dayton, NJ), and Bobby Esposito (Bridgewater, NJ) were chosen to represent the young officials from the Atlantic District at NHL games that were held during Hockey Weekend Across America.

Eric and Charlie attended the Philadelphia Flyers - New York Rangers game on March 1 in Philadelphia.  They were able to visit with NHL Officials Brian Murphy, Dave Jackson, Gord Dwyer, and Matt MacPherson, both in the locker room prior to the game and at center ice during the National Anthem.

Ryan and Bobby visited NHL officials Tony Sericolo, Greg KimmerlyDan O'Rourke, and Jonny Murray at the New Jersey Devils - San Jose Sharks game on March 2 in Newark.

Ian Walsh Referees at the 2014 Winter Olympics

Congratulations to Ian Walsh who is a referee at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia.

Ian's schedule for the the Men's Olympic Hockey Tournament is:

Ian's comments on the Olympics:

In USA Hockey Officials Reflect on Their Path to Sochi, when asked what it was about officiating that made him choose it as a career and have the Olympics as a goal, Ian said, "I've always enjoyed the challenge of learning and improving. Every game, every night presents a different challenge mentally and physically. I love the intensity of the game and the competitiveness of the players and officials in ice hockey."

Atlantic District Official Bill Marshall Featured in New York Times Article About Hockey Officiating in Central Park

Bill Marshall (Hoboken, NJ) was featured in The New York Times on Sunday, January 12, 2013 in an article that talks about his work as an official in the Central Park Hockey League in New York City.  According to the article, "He is now the busiest of the 14 referees at {Lasker Rink in the Harlem part of Central Park}, having officiated more than 500 games there in the past few years. He earns $70 a game and can work up to 15 games a week."

Colin Schmaeling (Levittown, NY, from the New York District) is also prominently mentioned in the article.

Marshall's day job is as the Assistant Manager of the The North Face Store at Broadway and 73rd Street.  About his two jobs, Marshall said, "Everybody hates the ref.  I love when people at the rink yell at me. I say, 'I can take it' -- I'm used to customers yelling at me because a jacket's not waterproof."

Atlantic District Officials on the Crew for Harvard - Yale at MSG on January 11

We've learned that Kevin Curtis (Hoboken, NJ) and Dan Taggart (Kearny, NJ) from the Atlantic District, Scott Wittemore (Charlestown, MA) and Glen Cooke will be part of the officiating crew for the Rivalry on Ice Game between Harvard - Yale game on Saturday, January 11 at Madison Square Garden.  The game, which will also air on NBC Sports Network, will take place at 8:00 pm.

Ian Walsh Chosen to Officiate Winter Olympics in Sochi

Congratulations to Ian Walsh who has been chosen to officiate the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.  Ice hockey competition begins on Saturday, February 8.

Update: The IIHF announced additional staff for men's hockey and the entire staff for women's hockey on December 2.

According to Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly, "...Ian Walsh, who was born in Philadelphia, was the only U.S. {referee} picked by the IIHF to work the Sochi Olympics in February."

Pat Hickey reported in the Montréal Gazette, "The other referees selected by the NHL are Mike Leggo, Brad Meier, Tim Peel, Kevin Pollock, Kelly Sutherland and {Dave Jackson}. The NHL has also selected linesmen Derek Amell, Lonnie Cameron, Greg Devorski, Brad Kovachik, Andy McElma and Mark Wheeler. They will be joined in Sochi by seven referees and eight linesmen from Europe."
