Trenton Burton and Andrew Bell Join the NHL Crew for Devils Game

Atlantic District officials Trenton Burton (Brick, NJ) and Andrew Bell (Bergenfield, NJ) had a fantastic experience that many officials dream of, when they joined the NHL officiating crew before the Devils game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday, March 4 at the Prudential Center. Trenton and Andrew got this opportunity during the celebration of USA Hockey's Hockey Weekend Across America.

Trenton and Andrew met with the game officials, Referees Tom Chmielewski and T.J. Luxmore, and Linesmen Libor Suchanek and Brian Murphy, in the locker room prior to the game, dressed, went on the ice for the pre-game laps, and lined up with the crew for the National Anthem.

Thanks to the NHL, the Devils and Golden Knights, and to the game officials for making this possible. And thanks to Trenton and Andrew for representing the Atlantic District and USA Hockey Officiating Programs on Hockey Weekend Across America.

Young AAHA Officials Cocco and Green Join the NHL Crew for Flyers Game

Atlantic District officials Louis Cocco (Sellersville, PA) and Kieran Green (West Chester, PA) had the experience of a lifetime when they joined the NHL officiating crew before the Flyers game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday, March 1, in one of the opening events of USA Hockey's Hockey Weekend Across America.

Louis and Kieran met with the game officials, Referees Steve Kozari and Ian Walsh, and Linesmen David Brisebois and Dereck Nansen, in the locker room for about 20 minutes, dressed, went on the ice for the pre-game laps, and even got put to work checking Dereck's net before the anthem.

Then, they joined the game officials for the National Anthem, as you see in the photo.

Thanks to the NHL, the Flyers and Hurricanes, and to the game officials for making this possible. And thanks to Louis and Kieran for representing the Atlantic District and USA Hockey Officiating Programs on a special day.

Don Koharski's Camp to be Held in Mid-August in Maine

Don Koharski's Officiating and Development Camp will occur on August 15-18, 2014 at MHG Ice Center in Saco, Maine.  This is the only U.S. location where Don and his staff of NHL and minor-pro league officials will offer their training this Summer.

Special guests at this location will include:

  • Paul Stewart, Director of Officiating ECAC and Vice-Chairman of Officiating KHL,
  • Eugene Binda, Supervisor of NCAA Division 1 Officials Atlantic Hockey, NCAA division 3 ECAC North East, MASCAC, North East 10, USPHL, EHL,
  • Jim Doyle, Supervisor of Officials AHL/ECHL, and
  • Don Garcia, Supervisor of Officials ECAC.

USA Hockey Officials Meet NHL Officials at Hockey Weekend Across America Games

USA Hockey Officials Eric Sailor (Sewell, NJ), Charlie Van Kula (Radnor, PA), Ryan Siegel (Dayton, NJ), and Bobby Esposito (Bridgewater, NJ) were chosen to represent the young officials from the Atlantic District at NHL games that were held during Hockey Weekend Across America.

Eric and Charlie attended the Philadelphia Flyers - New York Rangers game on March 1 in Philadelphia.  They were able to visit with NHL Officials Brian Murphy, Dave Jackson, Gord Dwyer, and Matt MacPherson, both in the locker room prior to the game and at center ice during the National Anthem.

Ryan and Bobby visited NHL officials Tony Sericolo, Greg KimmerlyDan O'Rourke, and Jonny Murray at the New Jersey Devils - San Jose Sharks game on March 2 in Newark.

Ian Walsh Referees at the 2014 Winter Olympics

Congratulations to Ian Walsh who is a referee at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia.

Ian's schedule for the the Men's Olympic Hockey Tournament is:

  • Thursday, February 13, Finland vs Austria, 3:00am Eastern Time, Bolshoy / NBC Sports Network
  • Saturday, February 15, Sweden vs Latvia, 12:00 noon Eastern Time, Shayba / NBC Sports Network
  • Sunday, February 16, Austria vs Norway, 3:00am Eastern Time, Bolshoy / USA Network

Ian's comments on the Olympics:

In USA Hockey Officials Reflect on Their Path to Sochi, when asked what it was about officiating that made him choose it as a career and have the Olympics as a goal, Ian said, "I've always enjoyed the challenge of learning and improving. Every game, every night presents a different challenge mentally and physically. I love the intensity of the game and the competitiveness of the players and officials in ice hockey."

Atlantic District Official Bill Marshall Featured in New York Times Article About Hockey Officiating in Central Park

Bill Marshall (Hoboken, NJ) was featured in The New York Times on Sunday, January 12, 2013 in an article that talks about his work as an official in the Central Park Hockey League in New York City.  According to the article, "He is now the busiest of the 14 referees at {Lasker Rink in the Harlem part of Central Park}, having officiated more than 500 games there in the past few years. He earns $70 a game and can work up to 15 games a week."

Colin Schmaeling (Levittown, NY, from the New York District) is also prominently mentioned in the article.

Marshall's day job is as the Assistant Manager of the The North Face Store at Broadway and 73rd Street.  About his two jobs, Marshall said, "Everybody hates the ref.  I love when people at the rink yell at me. I say, 'I can take it' -- I'm used to customers yelling at me because a jacket's not waterproof."
